Environment

Stonesoft strives to meet, if not exceed, high levels of environmental requirements, both in the manufacture of its appliances and in their disposal. Specifically, we follow the EU environmental directives RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment).

RoHS

RoHS has the goal of elimination of hazardous materials that are commonly found in electronic products today, such as lead (for soldering) and certain chemicals used in circuit boards.

All StoneGate appliances are RoHS compliant, with an exemption. This exemption allows for network infrastructure equipment containing lead in the soldering.

Stonesoft will comply with the European Unions Reduction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) 2002/95/EC. The RoHS Directive restricts substances including lead (Pb), mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and certain halogenated flame retardants such as PBB (polybrominated biphenyls) and PBDE (polybrominated diphenylethers) in electrical and electronic equipment placed on the European Union market on and after July 1st, 2006.

The exemption comes from the Annex of Directive 2002/95/EC permitting the use of lead in soldering for telecommunication network infrastructure equipment. The equipment falls under the "network infrastructure equipment" for telecommunications exemption defined according to the product's functionality.

While RoHS is an EU directive, many other regions, such as China and California, are using RoHS as a model for their own regulations.

WEEE

Stonesoft participates collecting and recycling its products to meet the goals of WEEE. The WEEE directive is closely tied to RoHS, approaching electronic waste disposal from the angle of recovering and recycling electronic waste. A network of recycling centers has been set up across the EU towards this aim.
