Stonesoft Customer Newsletter Q4, 2010

stonesoft-vanttinen-1516Dear Customer,

I am sure you have noticed Stonesoft in the news lately. October was an exciting month for us as we have been working hard to spread the news of the ground shaking discovery made by our research lab.

Advanced Evasion Techniques (AET) are a new species of evasion techniques that can be altered or combined in any order to avoid detection by security systems. AETs pose a serious threat to organization’s data capital and systems globally by bypassing most of today’s network security systems. This has the potential to permanently change the network security landscape.

We sat down and decided to try to think like hackers. We figured cyber criminals think radically and break the rules, so we chose to view security through their glasses. While our approach may seem radical, it led us to discover security testing methodologies and security architectures that do not follow the conventional rules of networking.

We announced AETs and made the world talk about the issue. We have been all over the media; our approach has been criticized, questioned, applauded and marveled at. We made this announcement because we saw that the security industry needs to be awakened from complacency.

We encourage all who are interested in AETs to join the community at www.antievasion.com. Only by working together can we expect to get ahead of the cyber criminals.

In the midst of all these threats we are still proud to say our solutions offer maximum protection of critical assets and operations, even against Advanced Evasion Techniques - StoneGate is anti-evasion ready.

In this newsletter you will find out about our company news as well as information about our training, products and events. I will leave you with one thought which is one of the major components in all the work we do here at Stonesoft for our customers: Stonesoft customers are protected against AETs today, and will be protected on an ongoing basis without any additional cost

On behalf of Stonesoft,

Mr. Ari Vänttinen
VP of Marketing, Stonesoft

Advanced Evasion Techniques Bypass Almost All Current Network Security Systems Without Leaving a Trace

In the stock exchange release published on 4 October, 2010 Stonesoft Corporation announced it has discovered a new network security threat category. These are so-called Advanced Evasion Techniques (AET), which can bypass current network security devices without leaving a trace. Advanced Evasion Techniques can also transport already known malware or phishing programs, worms and viruses, which otherwise would be detectable and stoppable by network security systems.

Stonesoft has reported the threat posed by these advanced evasion techniques to the national computer security incident response team of Finland CERT-FI for vulnerability coordination, and ICSA Labs, a US-based security-product testing and certification laboratory has confirmed the severity of the discovery.

Newly Discovered Threats Pose Serious Risks for Organizations Worldwide

Essentially, AETs provide today’s cyber-criminals with a master key to access any vulnerable system such as ERP and CRM applications by bypassing today’s network security systems. As a result, companies may suffer a significant data breach including the loss of confidential corporate information. Additionally, these types of AETs could be used by organized crime and cyber terrorists to conduct illegal and potentially damaging activities.

Social media is growing in importance. According to Gartner, Inc.*, around 20 percent of business users will be using the so-called social networking services as their most important communication tools by 2014. StoneGate Network Troubleshooting

Tired of spending too much time in solving network problems? The StoneGate Network Troubleshooting course teaches you how to analyze network problems accurately and reduce the time spent troubleshooting.

Whether the network problem is caused by a misconfiguration, a network device failure or a software bug, it is most important to solve the problem quickly. The troubleshooting process is in a key role: the faster the problem can be narrowed down to the exact point of failure, the faster a solution can be found. To be able to make correct conclusions on what is seen on the network and focus solely on the relevant information can significantly decrease the amount of time spent troubleshooting.

The StoneGate Network Troubleshooting course is designed for StoneGate administrators using StoneGate components together with other network analysis tools when troubleshooting network problems. The one-day training consists of several hands-on exercises which are reinforced by theoretical lessons. All necessary background knowledge for efficient network troubleshooting as well as the troubleshooting process itself will be covered.

Tip of the Month

In StoneGate Management Center 5.2, you can graphically set a threshold line for any progress or top rate statistics. When the threshold is exceeded, the system automatically raises an alert that you can escalate with StoneGate Alert Chains and Alert Policies in many flexible ways. With the help of this new Alert Thresholds feature you will detect faster the network anomalies such as link overloads, denial of service attacks, or any other unexpected network behavior.
