StoneGate NextGen Firewall Cuts Network Costs by 40 Percent for Brown McCarroll

Advanced security and high availability improve network reliability and productivity for large law firm

ATLANTA – April 20, 2010 – Stonesoft, a global provider of proven, innovative network security solutions, announced today that its StoneGate NextGen Firewall has cut network operation costs by nearly 40 percent for Brown McCarroll. A successful law firm based in Austin, Texas, Brown McCarroll has also used Stonesoft’s advanced firewall, high availability and network management capabilities to dramatically improve network uptime, which has led to substantial increases in productivity – specifically through the use of inter-office videoconferencing and VoIP communication.

With more than 230 employees in four offices, Brown McCarroll is a strong advocate of utilizing technologies such as VoIP and videoconferencing to reduce operating costs and increase productivity amongst its legal team. However, prior to Stonesoft, the firm’s firewall technology was consistently unreliable making it nearly impossible to use these technologies without added workaround and support costs.

Through Perket Technologies, a managed security service provider (MSSP) and a Stonesoft partner Brown McCarroll replaced its firewall/VPN infrastructure with five StoneGate NextGen Firewall devices – one cluster at its main office in Austin, and four other devices at the firm’s smaller locations in Houston, Dallas and El Paso. Almost immediately, Brown McCarroll was able to get rid of the external IP addresses and static network address translations assigned to each phone.

The StoneGate NextGen Firewall integrates advanced firewall and IPS capabilities with its patented high availability technologies for the highest level of perimeter protection. The solution thoroughly inspects all aspects of Brown McCarroll’s network traffic, from basic Web browsing to peer-to-peer applications and encrypted Web traffic in the SSL tunnel. With deep packet inspection support of more than 60 protocols and 900 applications, the StoneGate NextGen Firewall offers the sophisticated protection enterprises critically need – especially in the legal industry where confidentiality, productivity and the need to connect disparate office locations and workers are paramount.

In addition to the benefits of a network that is always up and running, Stonesoft has delivered proactive intrusion prevention, alerts and visibility into malicious traffic on Brown McCarroll’s network. The firm received immediate visibility and alerts on activity in their network they were not aware of previously.

“The site-to-site connectivity issues we experienced before Stonesoft were wasting precious resources – not just money, but the time of our firm’s partners and our IT staff. Today, we’re finally able to conduct business in a way that saves money, increases productivity and improves security. That’s something we were never able to achieve with our previous firewall vendor,” said Howard Hyten, director of IT at Brown McCarroll.
